Sencha Decaffeinated Green Tea (loose leaves)

Sencha Decaffeinated Green Tea

Description:

A light, clean decaffeinated green tea made to Japanese sencha specifications, with fresh vegetal character and a gently smooth finish—a straightforward choice for green-tea drinkers looking for significantly less caffeine.

The Experience

Sencha Decaffeinated Green Tea is for the tea drinker who wants simplicity: real green tea, no added herbs, fruit, flowers, or flavoring, and significantly less caffeine than a traditional green tea.

The leaf is produced to a Japanese sencha specification, using green-tea processing techniques designed to preserve its fresh character. In the cup, expect a light body with clean vegetal notes, gentle grassy freshness, and a smooth, delicate finish.

Because there are no additional ingredients to hide behind, this tea also offers an interesting opportunity to experience decaffeinated green tea on its own. It is quieter than a traditional sencha, as decaffeination inevitably changes the leaf, but retains enough green-tea character for a satisfying everyday cup.

*Decaffeinated tea is not necessarily caffeine-free; small residual amounts of caffeine may remain after processing.

How to Brew

Green tea rewards a gentler approach than black tea. Use 1 heaping teaspoon with The Perfect Measure Spoon per 8 oz / 237 ml of water at 185°F / 85°C.

Mild: 1–2 minutes
Medium: 2–3 minutes
Strong: 3–5 minutes

For your first cup, we recommend 2–3 minutes. From there, adjust the steeping time to find your preferred balance of vegetal flavor and strength. Avoid boiling water. Excessive temperature can quickly extract more bitterness and astringency from green tea and obscure its subtler character.

Perfect For

Sencha Decaf is particularly suited to green-tea drinkers reducing their caffeine intake, afternoon and evening tea, accompanying meals, or anyone looking for an unflavored alternative to our botanical decaf green blends. Its clean profile pairs nicely with rice dishes, vegetables, mild seafood, salads, fresh fruit, lightly flavored pastries, and simple savory foods.

How Is It Decaffeinated?

According to the producer, this tea uses a CO₂ decaffeination process. During this process, carbon dioxide is circulated under controlled pressure to extract most of the caffeine from the tea. The producer favors this method because it avoids the use of chemical solvents for caffeine extraction and is intended to preserve as much of the underlying tea character as practical.

Decaffeination does change tea. Rather than suggesting otherwise, we think that is useful for customers to understand. If you compare this tea directly with a traditional caffeinated sencha, you should expect differences in aroma, intensity, and body. Sencha Decaf's strength is that it provides the experience of a genuine, unflavored green tea with significantly less caffeine.

Understanding Traditional Green Tea Processing

Unlike black tea, green tea is processed to limit oxidation soon after harvest. This is what helps preserve the greener color and fresh vegetal character associated with the category.

This tea's supplied processing information describes it as non-fermented, traditionally steamed, pan-dried, and polished. Those processing choices are part of what separates the sensory experience of green tea from black tea. Instead of the deeper malt, fruit, wood, or tannic notes commonly associated with black teas, green teas tend toward a spectrum of fresh vegetation, grass, herbs, steamed greens, nuts, and subtle sweetness, depending on origin, cultivar, and processing.

Decaf Doesn't Mean Caffeine-Free

Sencha Decaf is genuine tea from the Camellia sinensis plant, which naturally contains caffeine. Decaffeination removes most of the caffeine, but small residual amounts may remain. Choose this tea when you want significantly less caffeine while continuing to drink genuine green tea. If complete caffeine avoidance is important, a naturally caffeine-free herbal or rooibos infusion is the more appropriate choice.
