Join Churchill’s Fine Teas and artist and Chinese calligraphy instructor Yu L. Huang for an afternoon of Chinese tea, calligraphy, and Lunar New Year tradition. You’ll sip Chinese teas selected by Churchill’s, learn the fundamentals of traditional Chinese brush calligraphy, practice writing meaningful Chinese characters, and discover how written words have carried wishes and blessings from one generation to the next.
Then choose a blessing that speaks to you and, with Yu’s guidance, transform it into your own piece of Lunar New Year calligraphy.
You’ll leave not only with something you made, but with a New Year blessing to bring home.
Bring Home a New Year Blessing
In the days leading up to Lunar New Year, homes and doorways throughout Chinese communities are decorated with 春聯 (chūnlián)—traditional Spring Festival couplets and calligraphic New Year decorations.
Usually written in black or gold ink on vibrant red paper, these characters and poetic phrases express wishes for the year ahead: 福 (good fortune and blessing), 安 (peace), 樂 (joy), 康 (health), and other hopes for prosperity, happiness, and family harmony.
The red paper itself carries meaning, too. Red is traditionally associated with happiness, vitality, celebration, and good fortune.
春聯 are therefore more than beautiful decorations. They put into words what we hope to welcome through our doors in the coming year. During this workshop, Yu will introduce this centuries-old Lunar New Year tradition and help you understand the meaning behind the characters before guiding you through writing them yourself.
Choose the blessing you would like to carry into the coming year, put brush to paper, and bring that blessing home with you for Lunar New Year on February 6. No knowledge of Chinese and no previous calligraphy experience are needed.
Tea, Ink & a Little Time to Slow Down
Tea and calligraphy have long shared cultural spaces in China. Both reward attention, patience, practice, and an appreciation for small details. While you work, Churchill’s will serve a selection of Chinese teas, creating another way to experience Chinese culture—this time through aroma and taste.
This isn’t about producing perfect calligraphy. It’s about discovering the stories behind a tradition, trying something with your own hands, sharing tea around the table, and deciding what you would like your own New Year blessing to say.
Meet Your Instructor: Yu L. Huang
Yu L. Huang is an artist, educator, art historian, and former museum curator specializing in Asian art whose experience brings unusual depth to this hands-on workshop. Her background includes graduate study in Asian art history and modern and contemporary Chinese art, college teaching, and curatorial work at museums including the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Birmingham Museum of Art, and Dayton Art Institute. Her own artistic practice draws upon both Western painting and traditional Asian ink-brush techniques.Yu will make Chinese calligraphy approachable for beginners while sharing the artistic and cultural meaning behind the characters and traditions you’ll encounter.

7 days before the event - 50% refund minus $10 processing fee per ticket
Within 7 days of the event - No refund, but an event voucher will be issued for future events (with difference paid at new booking) with $10 processing fee per ticket
