Ceylon Decaffeinated Black Tea

Description:

A classic single-ingredient Ceylon black tea from Sri Lanka, decaffeinated for a lighter, easy-drinking cup with the clean character of traditional black tea.

The Experience

Ceylon Decaffeinated Black Tea is for tea drinkers who want to reduce caffeine without adding fruit, flowers, spices, or flavoring to the equation.

This is a straightforward OP — Orange Pekoe grade Ceylon black tea from Sri Lanka, with one ingredient: decaffeinated black tea. It brews a light-bodied, clean, and balanced cup, retaining the familiar character of black tea while offering a gentler alternative to fully caffeinated varieties.

Because there are no added flavors competing for attention, this is also one of our most versatile decaf teas. Drink it straight to appreciate its simplicity, add milk for a traditional cup, serve it with lemon, or use it whenever a recipe calls for brewed black tea, but you prefer less caffeine. Sometimes the best tea doesn't need to be complicated. This is classic Ceylon, simply decaffeinated.

Origin, Grade & Ingredients

Tea Type: Pure Decaffeinated Black Tea
Grade: OP — Orange Pekoe
Origin: Sri Lanka
Ingredients: Decaffeinated black tea
Added Flavoring: None
Caffeine: Decaffeinated*
Body: Light

*Decaffeinated tea is not necessarily completely caffeine-free; small residual amounts of caffeine may remain after decaffeination.

How to Brew

Use approximately 1 heaping teaspoon per 8 oz / 237 ml of water at 212°F / 100°C.

Mild: 2–3 minutes
Medium: 4–5 minutes
Strong: 6–7 minutes

For your first cup, begin around 3–4 minutes. If you prefer a stronger traditional black-tea character, extend the steep rather than immediately adding more leaf.

Enjoy it straight first, then experiment with milk, lemon, or a little sweetener according to your preference.

Perfect For

Ceylon Decaf is particularly useful for afternoon and evening tea, customers reducing caffeine, serving a mixed group of tea drinkers, or simply enjoying another pot when you don't want another fully caffeinated cup. Pair it with scones, shortbread, tea sandwiches, toast, breakfast pastries, mild cheeses, or simple cakes.

What Does OP — Orange Pekoe — Actually Mean?

Despite the name, Orange Pekoe has nothing to do with oranges or orange flavoring. OP — Orange Pekoe — is a traditional leaf-grading term used for black tea. It describes aspects of the finished leaf rather than telling you how the tea will taste.

That's particularly worth explaining with Ceylon Decaf because its ingredient list is so simple: Decaffeinated black tea. There is no orange, bergamot, or other flavoring added.

What Does “Ceylon” Mean?

Ceylon is the historic name for Sri Lanka, and the term remains deeply established in the international tea trade. Sri Lanka is one of the world's important black-tea-producing countries, but “Ceylon tea” shouldn't be understood as one specific flavor. Teas grown in different parts and elevations of the island can vary significantly in body, aroma, briskness, and complexity. This particular Ceylon Decaf is light-bodied and classic in style, making it an especially approachable everyday tea.

Decaffeinated vs. Caffeine-Free

These terms mean different things. Ceylon Decaf begins as traditional tea from the Camellia sinensis plant, which naturally contains caffeine. Decaffeination removes most—but not necessarily every trace—of that caffeine.

Naturally caffeine-free beverages such as rooibos and most herbal infusions don't begin with traditional tea leaves and therefore don't naturally contain tea caffeine. Choose Ceylon Decaf when you want real black tea with significantly less caffeine. If avoiding caffeine entirely is important to you, explore a naturally caffeine-free herbal or rooibos blend instead.

Why Keep a Pure Decaf in Your Tea Collection?

Flavored decaffeinated teas can be wonderful, but a pure decaf serves a different purpose. There is no bergamot telling you this should taste like Earl Grey. No berry determining the direction of the cup. No vanilla, caramel, spice, or flowers. That simplicity gives you freedom.

  • Straight → a clean, light black tea
  • With milk → a softer traditional cup
  • With lemon → brighter and more refreshing
  • With food → neutral enough to accompany a wide range of flavors

For customers who tell us, “I just want tea—only decaf,” this is the place to start.
