Peppermint Black Tea (loose leaves)

Peppermint Black Tea

Description:

Brisk Indian and Ceylon black teas meet cooling peppermint in a refreshingly simple blend—full enough for the black-tea drinker, yet clean and minty through the finish.

The Experience

If you enjoy peppermint but want more body and depth than an herbal mint infusion, Peppermint Black Tea gives you both.

This straightforward blend combines black teas from India and Sri Lanka with peppermint leaves grown in the U.S.A. The black tea provides a medium-bodied foundation with the briskness and structure expected from traditional black tea, while peppermint introduces an immediate cooling aroma and a fresh, clean finish.

Unlike blends that surround mint with chocolate, fruit, or additional spices, this tea keeps the combination deliberately simple. There are only two ingredients: black tea and peppermint leaves. That simplicity makes it particularly easy to taste what each contributes. The black tea arrives with body and depth; peppermint lifts the cup and leaves its characteristic cooling sensation behind.

Tasting Notes

  • Top: Fresh peppermint • Cooling mint
  • Mid: Brisk black tea • Clean herbal character
  • Finish: Cool • Refreshing • Lingering mint
  • Body: Medium

Why You’ll Love It

Choose Peppermint Black Tea if you enjoy the refreshing character of peppermint but find a pure peppermint herbal infusion too light or one-dimensional for your taste.

The black-tea base makes this a more substantial cup while allowing peppermint to remain clearly recognizable. There are no sweet dessert flavors competing for attention and no added flavoring—the mint character comes from peppermint leaves themselves.

Prefer caffeine-free? Choose pure Peppermint Herbal Tea instead. Want something richer? Chocolate and mint blends take the same cooling flavor in a sweeter, dessert-inspired direction.

How to Brew

For a good starting point, use approximately 1 heaping teaspoon per 8 oz / 237 ml of water at 212°F / 100°C. Begin around 3–4 minutes, then adjust subsequent cups according to taste. A shorter steep keeps the cup brighter and allows peppermint to feel especially fresh. A longer infusion brings more strength and astringency from the black tea.

We recommend tasting this tea straight first. Without milk or sugar, the contrast between brisk black tea and cooling peppermint is easiest to appreciate.

It also makes an excellent iced tea. Brew slightly stronger than usual, then pour over ice for a particularly crisp expression of the peppermint.

Perfect For

Peppermint Black Tea works especially well as a morning alternative to a traditional breakfast tea, an afternoon refresher, or an iced tea when you want something cooling without fruit flavors. Pair it with dark chocolate, chocolate cookies, shortbread, brownies, vanilla cake, or simple butter cookies. Chocolate is particularly effective because the richness of cacao contrasts beautifully with peppermint's cooling finish.

What Does Peppermint Actually Add?

Peppermint does more than make tea taste “minty.” Its distinctive cooling sensation comes largely from menthol, a naturally occurring component of peppermint. Menthol interacts with temperature-sensitive receptors in the mouth, creating the perception of coolness even though the tea itself may be piping hot.

That creates an interesting sensory contrast in this blend: The temperature says hot. The peppermint says cool. Pay attention after you swallow rather than only while the tea is in your mouth. The black tea's briskness fades while the cooling peppermint sensation continues to linger. That's part of what makes mint teas feel so refreshing.

Why Simple Blends Can Be Useful for Developing Your Palate

Some of the easiest teas for learning to taste aren't the most elaborate ones. Peppermint Black Tea has only two ingredients, which makes it unusually easy to identify what each contributes.

Take the first sip and look for the weight and briskness of the black tea. Then pay attention to the finish and notice the aroma and cooling sensation of peppermint.

If you have pure peppermint and an unflavored black tea at home, taste all three side by side. You'll quickly discover which characteristics belong to the tea, which belong to the peppermint, and how they change when blended together. This kind of comparison is one of the simplest ways to build a more confident tea palate.

Hot or Iced?

This blend changes noticeably with temperature.

  • Hot, the black-tea foundation is more prominent, creating a traditional tea experience followed by cooling peppermint.
  • Iced, peppermint moves forward. The combination of cold temperature and mint's cooling sensation makes the cup exceptionally refreshing, while the black tea provides enough body to keep it from tasting thin.

If you're making it iced, try it unsweetened first. Its clean, mint-forward character may be exactly what you're looking for without anything added.
