How to Brew

First-flush Darjeeling benefits from a gentler approach than most black teas.

Use approximately 1 heaping teaspoon per 8 oz / 237 ml of water and brew at 180–190°F / 82–88°C for approximately 2–3 minutes. If your water has reached a full boil, allow it to cool for about 5 minutes before steeping.

We recommend trying Orange Valley without milk or sweetener first. Its delicate vegetal notes and white-peach sweetness are easily overwhelmed by additions. Adjust subsequent infusions according to your taste.

These tender early-season leaves produce teas that can be remarkably different from those harvested later in the year. First flush is typically associated with a lighter, fresher, more lively profile, often displaying vegetal, floral, and naturally fruit-like characteristics.

That's part of what makes Orange Valley so interesting.

Technically, you're drinking black tea. But place it beside a robust Assam and the resemblance may seem surprisingly distant. Its lighter oxidation style and delicate spring character can make first-flush Darjeeling feel almost as though it occupies a space between conventional categories.

Later in the season, Darjeeling changes again. Second-flush teas generally become rounder and more developed, with the famous muscatel character becoming particularly important.

Tasting the seasons side by side is one of the best ways to understand why serious tea drinkers pay attention not only to origin and estate, but also to harvest.

The Orange Valley Estate

Orange Valley Estate takes its evocative name from the orange trees historically found around the tea garden.

The estate sits within the mountainous Darjeeling landscape at elevations ranging approximately from 1,000 to 2,000 meters (3,300–6,500 feet). Across that substantial elevation range, tea grows under the cooler conditions that help give high-grown Darjeeling its celebrated aromatic character.

The name also feels particularly appropriate when tasting this first flush. Although no orange is added to the tea, the garden itself is remembered for the fruit trees surrounding it, while the finished cup expresses its own naturally fresh and fruit-like personality. This is one of the pleasures of estate tea: the name on the package points to an actual garden and growing environment, rather than simply describing a flavor.

What Does SFTGFOP1 Mean?

At first glance, SFTGFOP1 may look more like a password than a tea grade. It stands for Special Finest Tippy Golden Flowery Orange Pekoe 1. The terminology belongs to the traditional grading system used for orthodox teas and describes characteristics of the manufactured leaf. The references to “flowery” and “tippy” relate to the tender portions and tips visible in high-quality leafy tea.

And despite the words Orange Pekoe, there is no orange flavor implied by the grade. Orange Pekoe is a traditional tea-grading term, not a reference to citrus. That distinction is especially amusing with Orange Valley, where the estate really is named for orange trees—but neither the estate name nor the Orange Pekoe grade means that oranges have been added to your cup. The white-peach sweetness you may notice? That comes naturally from the tea.

Why Lower the Water Temperature?

Most black teas in our collection are brewed with water close to 212°F / 100°C. Orange Valley is different.

The delicate early-spring leaves of a first-flush Darjeeling can become overly astringent when treated like a robust breakfast tea. Brewing at 180–190°F allows the lighter vegetal, aromatic, and fruit-like characteristics to emerge more clearly. This makes brewing part of the tasting experience. 

Try Orange Valley at the recommended lower temperature first. If you're curious, compare it with a hotter or longer infusion later. The leaves are the same.  But the cup can be remarkably different.
