Monk's Blend Decaffeinated Black Tea

Description:

A smooth, aromatic decaffeinated black tea layered with sweet grenadine and creamy vanilla notes, finished with calendula and marigold petals for a mellow, distinctive cup.

The Experience

Monk’s Blend Decaffeinated Black Tea brings the intriguing flavor profile of the classic Monk’s Blend into a lower-caffeine cup.

The blend begins with a high-grown, orthodox black tea from India, selected for its ability to retain satisfying character through decaffeination. Natural flavors create the signature combination of fruity grenadine and soft vanilla, while calendula and marigold petals add visual warmth to the loose leaf.

The result is smooth, gently fruity, subtly creamy, and pleasantly aromatic. Grenadine provides a bright fruit impression rather than overt sweetness, while vanilla rounds the edges of the black tea and creates a mellow finish.

This tea is for anyone who wants a flavored decaf but finds citrus, spice, or berry blends too assertive; Monk’s Blend offers something distinctly different: fruit and vanilla in quiet balance with the tea itself.

How to Brew

Use 1 heaping teaspoon with The Perfect Measure Spoon per 8 oz / 237 ml of water at 212°F / 100°C.

Mild: 2–3 minutes
Medium: 4–5 minutes
Strong: 6–7 minutes

For your first cup, we recommend approximately 4 minutes. This gives the black tea enough time to develop while keeping the grenadine and vanilla balanced.

Try it straight first. A splash of milk can emphasize the creamy vanilla character, while serving it over ice brings the fruit notes forward.

Perfect For

Monk’s Blend Decaf is particularly enjoyable for afternoon tea, evening reading, dessert tea, or anytime you want an aromatic flavored black tea without another fully caffeinated cup. Pair it with shortbread, vanilla cake, almond pastries, scones, berries, dark chocolate, or simple butter cookies.

What Does “Grenadine” Taste Like in Tea?

Grenadine is often associated with the brilliant red syrup used in cocktails, but here “grenadine” describes the intended flavor profile—not the addition of sugary syrup to your tea. Think of it as a sweet, rounded red-fruit impression that sits between the black tea and vanilla.

The balance is what makes Monk’s Blend distinctive: Fruit → black tea → vanilla → mellow finish. Vanilla softens the brighter fruit character, while the underlying tea prevents the blend from becoming dessert-like or overly sweet.

Why Start with High-Grown Tea for a Decaf Blend?

High-grown tea is deliberately selected as the foundation for its decaffeinated blends because it retains satisfying character particularly well through the decaffeination process.

That's important with a blend like Monk’s Blend. A flavored tea should still have enough underlying tea character that you're drinking black tea with flavor, rather than flavoring with a barely noticeable tea base. Here, the medium body provides structure for the grenadine and vanilla while remaining smooth enough for an easy-drinking decaf.

How Is It Decaffeinated?

The producer identifies this tea as using a CO₂ decaffeination process. Carbon dioxide is used under controlled conditions to extract most of the caffeine from the tea. The producer specifically selects teas that retain good cup character through this process, since decaffeination naturally changes the finished tea to some degree. The result is a tea with significantly less caffeine while retaining enough body to support the blend's natural flavors.

What Does FP — Flowery Pekoe — Mean?

FP stands for Flowery Pekoe, a traditional leaf grade. “Flowery” in the grade does not mean that the black tea itself has flowers added to it. Tea grades primarily describe characteristics of the manufactured leaf rather than providing an ingredient list or flavor description.

This particular blend does contain actual flowers—calendula and marigold petals—but those are separate from its FP tea grade. It's a useful example of why tea terminology can sometimes be confusing:

  • FP / Flowery Pekoe → tea grade
  • Calendula + marigold → actual ingredients

Monk’s Blend Decaf vs. Monk’s Blend

If you already love the original Monk’s Blend, this is the natural lower-caffeine companion.

  • Monk’s Blend Decaffeinated - Grenadine • Vanilla • Mellow
Best for: enjoying the signature Monk’s Blend flavor with significantly less caffeine
  • Monk’s Blend Black Tea - Grenadine • Caramel • Vanilla
Best for: the fuller regular-caffeine expression of the blend

The two share the same general flavor family, but they should not be expected to taste completely identical. Decaffeination changes the underlying tea, and the ingredient formulations differ, so we recommend appreciating each on its own terms rather than expecting the decaf to be an exact copy.

Decaf Doesn't Mean Caffeine-Free

Monk’s Blend Decaf contains genuine tea from the Camellia sinensis plant, which naturally contains caffeine before processing. Decaffeination removes most—but not necessarily every trace—of that caffeine.

Choose it when you want substantially less caffeine while still enjoying a true flavored black tea. If complete caffeine avoidance is important, one of our naturally caffeine-free herbal or rooibos blends would be the better choice.
