Genmaicha Matcha Blend Green Tea (loose leaves)

Genmaicha Matcha Blend Green Tea

Description:

Japanese Bancha green tea and toasted brown rice meet matcha powder in a richer, greener interpretation of classic Genmaicha—combining warm roasted grain with the distinctive vegetal depth of matcha.

The Experience

Genmaicha Matcha Blend Green Tea, traditionally known as Matcha-iri Genmaicha, brings together two recognizable Japanese tea traditions in one cup.

It begins with Bancha green tea and toasted brown rice, the classic foundation of Genmaicha. Matcha—finely powdered green tea—is then added to the blend, coating the leaves and rice in a vivid layer of green.

This tea retains Genmaicha's comforting toasted, nutty, roasted-grain character, but the matcha adds greater intensity, vegetal depth, and a fuller green-tea presence.

If traditional matcha feels unfamiliar or intense, this tea offers another way to begin exploring its flavor. And if you already love Genmaicha, the addition of matcha creates a fascinating next step.

Tea & Ingredients

Tea Type: Green Tea with Toasted Rice & Matcha
Traditional Style: Matcha-iri Genmaicha
Base Tea: Bancha Green Tea
Ingredients: Green tea, brown rice, matcha (powdered green tea)
Added Flavoring: None
Caffeine: Caffeinated
Body: Medium

How to Brew

Use approximately 1 heaping teaspoon per 8 oz / 237 ml of water at 175°F / 79°C. Steep for 3 minutes.

You may notice that the liquor appears cloudier or more intensely green than ordinary Genmaicha. That's expected: matcha is powdered tea, so some of it disperses into the water rather than remaining entirely with the infused leaves. A little matcha may also settle in the cup. Gently swirl before drinking if desired.

Perfect For

Genmaicha Matcha Blend is particularly suited to Genmaicha lovers ready for a richer cup, matcha beginners, Japanese-tea explorers, savory-tea drinkers, or anyone who enjoys roasted and vegetal flavors together. Pair it with sushi, rice dishes, noodles, grilled fish, tofu, mushrooms, dumplings, roasted vegetables, eggs, or lightly sweetened Japanese-style desserts. It is also an excellent tea to enjoy with a meal because the toasted grain and savory green-tea character complement rather than overwhelm food.

What Is Matcha-iri Genmaicha?

The Japanese name is wonderfully descriptive:

  • Genmai (玄米) → brown rice
  • Cha (茶) → tea
  • Matcha (抹茶) → powdered green tea
  • Iri (入り) → containing or with

So Matcha-iri Genmaicha essentially means Genmaicha with matcha added. Traditional Genmaicha already combines green tea with roasted rice. Adding matcha creates another layer of tea flavor without requiring fruit, spices, or added flavoring. That's what makes this blend so interesting: its complexity comes from just three ingredients—green tea, brown rice, and powdered green tea.

Genmaicha vs. Genmaicha Matcha Blend

These two teas make an excellent side-by-side tasting.

  • Genmaicha Green Tea: Toasted Rice • Nutty • Smooth
Best for: a mellow, comforting Japanese tea where roasted grain takes center stage
  • Genmaicha Matcha Blend Green Tea (This Tea): Toasted Rice • Matcha • Vegetal
Best for: a richer Genmaicha with a stronger green-tea presence

The difference isn't simply that one is “stronger.” Regular Genmaicha allows the warm roasted-rice character to remain especially prominent. Adding matcha shifts the balance toward the tea itself, creating more vegetal intensity and a fuller impression in the cup. Try them side by side, and you'll immediately understand what one additional ingredient can do.

Is This the Same as Drinking Traditional Matcha?

No—and that distinction is important. Traditional matcha is finely powdered tea prepared by whisking the powder directly into water. There are no loose leaves or toasted rice involved.

Genmaicha Matcha Blend is an infused loose-leaf tea containing matcha. You steep the Bancha and rice, rather than preparing the entire beverage with a matcha whisk. That makes it a useful bridge for someone curious about matcha but not yet ready for its concentrated flavor or traditional preparation.

You'll experience some of matcha's vegetal character, green color, and powdered-tea texture, but within the softer, toastier framework of Genmaicha.

Explore Japanese Green Tea

Start with Genmaicha for the comforting combination of green tea and toasted rice, then taste Genmaicha Matcha Blend to discover how matcha changes its color, texture, and flavor.

From there, explore Bancha to better understand the green-tea foundation, or move toward traditional matcha to experience powdered green tea as the center of the cup rather than one component of a blend.

Together, they offer an unusually accessible way to understand how Japanese tea can move from pure leaf → leaf and roasted grain → leaf, roasted grain, and powdered tea. It is a simple progression, but one that reveals how remarkably different Japanese green teas can become through form, processing, and preparation
